Medical student
American University of the Caribbean
I am a third year medical student completing my clerkships Nassau University Medical Center. Prior to my clerkships, my background in consultation- liaison psychiatry was limited. I got a glimpse, during basic sciences when I presented at the student government research symposium on “ Major Depressive Disorder in Perinatally Infected Youth Living with HIV”. This project allowed me to recognize the importance of biopychosocial integration in healthcare and cultivated my interest in psychiatry. As I gained more exposure during my clerkships I was able to delve deeper into the intricacies of mood disorders and medical- psychiatric co-morbidities. Currently, my focus is narrowed on the treatment of perinatal depression with the use of alternative treatments to provide cost –effective methods to patients and improve patient outcomes. My hope is to influence current guidelines with our proposed project to improve patient outcomes.
