Dr. Beresford is a tenured Professor of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine, University of Colorado Denver, and physician at the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center (RRVAMC). His clinical focus is in Consultation Psychiatry where he teaches residents and students. His research foci include alcoholism, psychological adaptive mechanisms, and traumatic brain injury. Most recently he received VA Merit Review Grant award to study molecular mechanisms in alcohol dependence. Administratively, he directs the strategic planning operations for the R&D Service at this medical center, seeing more than a doubling of the research enterprise in the past ten years. Additionally, he has improved care at the RRVAMC by developing the Severity of Ethanol Withdrawal Scale—the SEWS—that shortens the time needed to treat withdrawal patients. He is best known for his work in alcoholism and liver transplant. He is the author of Psychological Adaptive Mechanisms from Oxford University Press, 2012, and others.
