Elias Khawam, MD, is Section Head of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry at the Cleveland Clinic and Distiquished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He graduated from Damascus University School of medicine in 1991. He went on to train in palliative medicine, adult general psychiatry, and consultation liaison psychiatry at the Cleveland Clinic. After graduation, Dr. Khawam joined the faculty at the Cleveland VA Medical Center where he practiced psychiatry on an acute inpatient adult psychiatric unit. He returned to Cleveland Clinic in 2008 as a Consultation Liaison Psychiatry staff and he established the Multiple Sclerosis Consultation Liaison Clinic at the Mellen Center. Dr. Khawam served as a Co-President for Cleveland CL Society from 2014 till 2017.
Dr. Khawam has special interests in psychiatric complications of medical and neurological illnesses, pain and symptoms management, and in treating seriously mentally ill patients. In addition to his clinical work, he has written and presented extensively in the fields of Psychiatry, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Palliative Medicine and Multiple Sclerosis.
