After finishing up my medical school education at St. Georges University, I pursued my clinical residency in psychiatry at Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital. My residency training equipped me with a deeper understanding of psychiatric symptoms and diagnoses epecially in the medically ill. My psychodynamic training allowed me a framwork to make nuanced connections between mind and body that so often complicates patient care.
In residency I was a Co-Leader for Emergency Medicine Residency Balint Group created to address resident well-being/burnout, a collaboration between Psychiatry Residents and University of Connecticut Emergency Medicine Residents. This was a case-based weekly group for Emergency Medicine Residents to confidentially discuss difficult interactions and/or systems-based issues impacting medical care. Furthermore in residency I was involved in a research elective, employing functional MRI to predict outcome of bariatric surgery patients. Project is part of an ongoing NIDDK that recruits successive bariatric surgical candidates. The study goal is to predict improved surgical assignment or alternative treatment recommendation for future bariatric candidates. The study is designed in three group participants. The pilot study included 65 bariatric surgery subjects followed longitudinally to assess surgical outcomes.
While at my pyscho-oncology fellowship training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center I was further able to deepen my understanding of neuropsychiatric manifestations in cancer patients. This allowed me to care for complex medically ill patients during a pandemic battling both COVID-19 and Cancer. I am currently a CL attending at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein Collge of Medicine
