Rebecca Weintraub Brendel MD, JD is Director of the Master’s Degree Program at and Associate Director of the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics. She bases her clinical work in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) where she is the director of Law and Ethics at the Center for Law, Brain, and Behavior, provides medical oversight for the hospital’s inpatient guardianship team, consults to the intensive care management program, and practices clinical and forensic psychiatry. She is a past president of ACLP and President-Elect of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).
Dr. Brendel has spent her career at the interface of psychiatry, medicine, law, and ethics, and has held positions on multiple clinical and organizational ethics committees. She is an appointed member of the American Medical Association (AMA) Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs, Chair of the Massachusetts Medical Society Committee on Ethics, Grievances, and Professional Standards, and a past chair of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Ethics Committee. She has also served on ethics committees of the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society, the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. She has also served psychiatry as a parliamentarian to the APA Board of Trustees and on the APA delegation to the AMA as an alternate delegate and delegate.
