Ihuoma Njoku, MD is a general psychiatry resident at the University of Virginia Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences with a passion for education, research, and global health. She was born and raised in Baltimore, MD, attending the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, completing a Bachelor of Science in both Biological Sciences and Psychology. She went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where she received the Bert and Sally O'Malley Award for Outstanding Medical Student Research. She investigated the effects of an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor on executive function after traumatic brain injury and received recognition from the National Neurotrauma Society for this work. She has also received the Honorable Mention from the Psychiatric Society of Virginia for her presentation on Clozapine-Induced Myocarditis. With NIH funding, she has worked in the United Kingdom in behavioral and aging research. Her current clinical interests include global and refugee mental health. Her academic interests include healthcare delivery, the physician shortage, and medical trainee education. She designed a review series for medical students rotating on the Psychiatry Clerkship. Her passion for medical student education and compassionate care has been recognized by the Gold Humanism and Honor Society (GHHS) Leonard Tow Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Awards as well as induction into the GHHS. She holds multiple national positions including as an American Psychiatric Association APA/APAF Leadership Fellow, serving as a member of the Council on Communications. She also serves as a member of the American Association of Medical Colleges’ Organization of Resident Representatives (AAMC-ORR). She has expertise in speaking about the importance of addressing mental health needs in non-psychiatric settings. Dr. Njoku plans to incorporate her training and experiences to close the gap in access to mental health services through collaborative care.
