Donald I. Abrams, MD is the former chief of Hematology-Oncology at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Professor Emeritus of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco, he still maintains an integrative oncology consultation practice at the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. He has been funded to study the health effects of inhaled cannabis since 1997. Dr. Abrams has conducted pharmacokinetic interaction studies of inhaled cannabis and HIV protease inhibitors and sustained release opioids. His team evaluated the Volcano vaporizer as a smokeless delivery device. His most reason study evaluated vaporized cannabis with a 1:1 ratio of tetrahydrocannabinol to cannabidiol in patients with pain related to sickle cell disease. He was a member of the committee that wrote The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine published in January 2017.
