Gustavo was born in Brazil and received his MD from the University of Sao Paulo. He completed two Psychiatry residencies: the first in his home country (University of Sao Paulo, Brazil) and the second in the United States (UTSW/University of Maryland). Currently, he is a Mood Disorders Fellow at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. His main area of interest are treatment selection in major depressive disorder, and depressive disorders in the setting of neuropsychiatric and general medical diseases. Gustavo has developed research on predictors of response to traditional and rapid-acting antidepressants. His main research focus is the development of multivariate predictive models (using demographics, clinical variables, serum biomarkers, neuroimaging, etc) to accurately predict the best treatment for specific individuals with depression in the context of precision psychiatry.
