Dr Kunkel is the Chief Medical Officer of Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute (PPI), a joint venture of the Penn State Milton S. Hershey School of Medicine and UPMC-Pinnacle, a true academic-community partnership. She is a Professor and Director of Population Behavioral Health in the Department of Psychiatry at the Milton S. Hershey Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, the Joyce D. Kales University Chair in Community Psychiatry, and Vice Chair for Community Psychiatry. PPI is an 89-bed psychiatric hospital, with 2 partial hospitalization programs, and a myriad of outpatient psychiatric services. Previously, Dr. Kunkel served as the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs for the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Thomas Jefferson University from 1989-2017. Dr. Kunkel has authored over 60 peer-reviewed and almost 50 non peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Kunkel is a graduate of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program. She also completed an administrative fellowship with the American Association of Academic Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry (AACDP) in 2010. She currently serves on the AAMC CMOG Steering Committee and was selected to the highly competitive, AAMC CMO Leadership Academy.
Dr. Kunkel graduated with a B.Sc. from McGill University in psychobiology and stayed there for her degree in Medicine. She trained in Psychiatry at New York University Medical Center and then completed a Psycho-oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 1989.
