Dr. Wise graduated from Dartmouth College, Duke University School of Medicine and then completed his training with a fellowship in Liaison Medicine at SUNY-Downstate Medical Center. He is Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins and George Washington University and Chair Emeritus of the Department of Psychiatry at Inova Fairfax Hospital. His career has focused upon the relationship between Psychiatry and Medicine. In that capacity he has been president of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine; the American Psychosomatic Society; and the American Association of General Hospital Psychiatrists. He served on the item writing committee of the added qualifications examination for Psychosomatic Medicine. He is the series editor for Advances in Psychosomatic Medicine; Jourrnal of Sex and Marital Therapy; Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics and is on the advisory boards of psychosomatic journals in Italy and Portugal. He has also served as Director of Research at the Sexual Behaviors Unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has published over 300 papers and book chapters and edited 8 books. He is a former chair of the Council of Adult Psychiatry for the American Psychiatric Association, and is a Fellow in the American College of Psychiatrists; the American College of Physicians; the American Psychopathological Association, and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
