WORKSHOP LIVE DISCUSSION: The Ten Most Important Papers in C-L Psychiatry for the 2020-2021 Academic Year

Introduction: Consultation-liaison psychiatry is a remarkably broad field. Thus, it is difficult to remain abreast of advances in the many areas of medicine relevant to the field. Our aim is to present the ten most important papers from the 2020-2021 academic year, as rated by members of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Guidelines and Evidence Based Medicine Subcommittee.

Methods: The Subcommittee publishes annotated abstracts on the Academy website quarterly. All subcommittee members are invited to rate all annotated articles on clinical importance to practice and quality of scholarship, and our recent work demonstrates good to excellent interrater reliability using this method. We will present the top ten rated articles, published between July of 2020 and June of 2021. Dr. Bienvenu will discuss the methods of the subcommittee and the annotation section of the Academy website. The five speakers will each present two of the top ten papers, discussing the findings, the relevance of the work for consultation-liaison psychiatrists, and the strengths and weaknesses of each study.

Results: As of the time of abstract submission, the 2020-2021 academic year is still underway (i.e., some highly relevant and well-done studies have been published only recently, or will be published in the next 3 months). However, based on the first 6 months of data, we expect to present studies on the prognostic importance of delirium trajectory, the risk of sexually transmitted infections in patients with schizophrenia, the neurologic sequelae of COVID-19, the renal risk of lithium in older patients, the beneficial effects of mindfulness interventions for patients with cancer, and approximately five more recent clinically important and methodologically rigorous articles.

Conclusions: The top 10 articles will offer valuable guidance to consultation-liaison psychiatrists in various practice areas. This presentation will also highlight the annotated abstract section of the Academy website, which includes approximately 25 new entries per quarter and is seeing increasing use.

Attendees will recognize the strengths and weaknesses of ten of the most clinically important and methodologically rigorous papers in the consultation-liaison psychiatry literature published in the 2020-2021 academic year
