Joe completed residency, psychiatric epidemiology fellowship, and a PhD in clinical investigation at Johns Hopkins, where he joined the faculty in 1997. He has studied the epidemiology and genetic epidemiology of anxiety and depressive disorders and how they relate to personality traits. In the last 15-20 years, he has focused on psychiatric morbidity after critical illness/intensive care.
